“How’s everything going with your hunky politician friend?” Diamond asked later, when Ciara had returned home after her dinner with Jonathan.

“Why do you want to know?” Ciara asked, kicking off her shoes and throwing her briefcase on a nearby chair. She plopped down in the plush recliner.

“Can’t a mother be curious?” Diamond asked, putting down her Cosmo magazine. She was trying to forge a bond with Ciara, but her stubborn daughter would not cut her some slack. “You’re spending an awful lot of time with the fella. Heck, you’ve even kicked me to the curb and I live with ya.”

“Temporarily.”

“I know that,” Diamond retorted. “Why is it so difficult to believe that I want to share a little part of your life?”

Diamond cast her head low and Ciara felt bad. How did her mother always find a way of making her feel guilty?

“Things are going fine,” Ciara tried again. “Actually, better than fine.”

“So that news report was right? You guys are an item?”

“Yes, but not how they implied.” Ciara turned to face her. “There’s nothing illicit going on. We’re both single and available.”

“Yes, but that’s not telling me much. How do you feel about him?” Diamond pressed Ciara for more information.

“I think he’s an incredible man,” Ciara replied. “Intelligent, kind, caring, extremely dedicated and did I mention incredibly handsome and sexy…” Her voice trailed off as she envisioned his chiseled frame.

“Sounds like he’s the kind of man a woman could marry,” Diamond commented. “And if so, you need to snag him while you can. Rich ones like him don’t come along every day and trust me, if he wins the election, women will be hanging all over him.”

“I don’t want to get married, Diamond,” Ciara protested. “Unlike you, I don’t want or need a man to complete me. I’m a whole person entirely on my own.” She rose and went to the kitchen for a glass of wine after her long day.

Diamond ignored the dig and continued. “C’mon, baby cakes, this is your mama you’re talking to. That tough-as-nails routine may work on some, but not me. I’m sure you don’t want another woman coming in and snatching up your man. So, claim him, if he’s yours. I would. His family is probably rolling in the cash. You’d never want for anything.”

“Is money all you think about?” Ciara asked, sipping her wine at the doorway.

“No, but since you mentioned it,” Diamond replied, “I could sure use some.”

“Why? What do you need it for?”

“When I don’t have any cash in my pocket, I feel uneasy.”

“Then maybe you should find a job,” Ciara responded, exasperated.

“As old as I am?” Diamond chuckled. “What could I possibly do? And who would hire me? The only thing I was ever good at was dancing and I’m well past my prime for that.”

“So try something new,” Ciara encouraged her. “You could go back to school, get a certificate in something. Anything, just as long as it gets you out of the apartment. I’d even pay for it.
